Onion Rings
We couldn't get enough of these crunchy onion rings in the EatingWell Test Kitchen. Try any seasoning blend that you have on hand to add flavor to the breading or substitute 1 teaspoon salt instead. Seasoned whole-wheat breadcrumbs are available in some supermarkets and natural-foods stores. If you can find them, try them in place of the plain breadcrumbs and seasoning blend......
Boneless Buffalo Wings
Even though boneless Buffalo wings are made with healthy white-meat chicken, they're usually deep-fried and drenched in hot sauce laced with butter. The solution: chicken tenders are dredged in seasoned whole-wheat flour and cornmeal, pan-fried in only a small amount of oil and then drizzled with a tangy hot pepper sauce. With a fraction of the fat, calories and sodium, these boneless wings are reason enough to throw a party..........
Avocado Fries with Sriracha Aioli
Creamy avocados are a delicious foil to crunchy breading in this healthy oven-fried avocado fries recipe. Dip into spicy Sriracha dipping sauce for a flavor explosion. Save your ripe avocados for guacamole or toast--only firm ones will do when making these fries.......

Eating out tonight, Guthrie's Chicken Fingers
Dinner Tonight: Guthrie's Chicken Fingers - Snack Box
For Breakfast this morning I made some Simply Potatoes Shredded Hash Browns, Heated up some Meijer Diced Ham, fried an Egg Sunnyside Up, made a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. I made a bed of the Hash Browns in a bowl and sprinkled some Sargento Reduced Fat Sharp Cheddar Cheese.
Next I put the Diced Ham over top the Hash Browns then put the Sunnyside Up Egg on to top it off. I love combinations of Potatoes and Ham. Cooler out today, only a high of 36 degrees and partly cloudy. Not a thing going on today, I was a slug! Watched College Football and Basketball and caught up on some shows I had recorded. Mom took me out to eat tonight for my Birthday, turning 60 today! Been rough getting here but doing pretty good now. I normally don't eat out but Mom loves going out so we had planned on going to Texas Roadhouse but they were on over an hour wait so we switched it to Guthrie's Chicken Fingers. We'll go to Texas Roadhouse next week, during the week.
The meal was so good! We each had a Guthrie's Chicken Fingers - Snack Box. The Snack Box
includes - 3 Chicken Fingers, Fries, and 1 Guthrie's Signature Sauce. For me their Chicken Fingers and Fries can't be beat, and we love the Special Sauce! Till tomorrow, later!

One of America's Favorites - Cheese Fries
![]() |
| Cheese fries |
Cheese fries or cheesy chips (latter British English) are an American fast-food dish, consisting of french fries covered in cheese with the possible addition of various other toppings. Cheese fries are generally served as a lunch- or dinner-time meal. They can be found in fast-food locations, diners, and grills all across the United States, as well as the rest of the world.
The dish originated in the United States, although its exact birthplace is still widely disputed. Cheese fries have been said to grow in popularity in the United States after canned cheese products such as Cheez Whiz hit the U.S. markets in 1952. Don A. Jenkins is said to have invented a variation of the cheese fry (the chili cheese fry), at the age of 16, in Tomball, Texas. Another report claims that a young fry cook named Austin Ruse was the first to serve this dish while working at Dairy Queen in St. Charles, MO.
A common method of making cheese fries involves pouring melted cheese onto a plate of fries:
1 - Place uncooked french fries (cut or frozen) onto a greased baking pan
2 - Bake at 450°F for about 15 minutes (or until golden brown)
3 - In a separate bowl, mix melted cheese with preferred spices, meats, or vegetables
4 - Once french fries are out of the oven, pour the melted cheese onto the fries
Throughout the Southwest US, cheese fries are often covered in melted cheddar cheese, bacon bits, jalapeño slices, and chives, and served with ranch dressing. Alternately, they are also served as carne asada fries. In Philadelphia, pizza fries are topped with melted mozzarella and served with pizza sauce on the side, while "mega fries" are topped with cheddar (or sometimes Cheez Whiz) and mozzarella cheese and bacon. Usually served with a side of ranch dressing. In New York City, Long Island, and New Jersey, they are covered with American, mozzarella, or Swiss cheese, then melted. In New Jersey and certain New York City diners, Disco Fries are served with mozzarella and brown gravy. In other parts of the US, nacho cheese is often used, especially in snack stand-type settings.

One of America's Favorites - Chili Burger
![]() |
| Chili Burger with Fries |
A chili burger (also known as a chili size, or simply size, stemming from "hamburger size" is a type of hamburger. It consists of a hamburger, with the patty topped with chili con carne. It is often served open-faced, and sometimes the chili is served alongside the burger rather than on top. The chili may be served alone, or with cheese, onions, or occasionally tomatoes as garnishes.
Chili burgers appear to have been invented in the 1920s by Thomas M. "Ptomaine Tommy" DeForest, who founded a sawdust-floored all-night restaurant, "Ptomaine Tommy's", located in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. Ptomaine Tommy's was open from around 1919 to 1958, where his chili burger was referred to as "size", and chopped onions as "flowers" or "violets".
The term size for a chili burger arguably derives from the portion size of the chili used at Ptomaine Tommy's. Ptomaine Tommy "had two ladles, a large and a small" with which to serve his chili, whether smothered on top of the burger or in a bowl; originally the ordering lingo used by his patrons was "hamburger size" vs. "steak size", but later simplified to "size" and "oversize". The use of the shorthand term "size" for burger-size portion of chili (in a bowl or on a burger) then gained currency throughout Los Angeles. Ptomaine Tommy was forced to close his restaurant August 10, 1958 and sell his property to satisfy creditors, and he died just a week later. His service to the community and his invention was noted by resolution of the California State Senate that same year. Food author John T. Edge considers the invention the milestone that marks the start of "traceable history of burgers in LA", a first step to what he considers the "baroque" character of the Los Angeles hamburger scene. By interviewing former customers and friends decades after the fact, columnist Jack Smith wrote a definitive article in 1974 about DeForest and the dish that he had invented which became a very important part of the history of Los Angeles. What helped spread the popularity of this is dish was Deforest's diverse clientel which included doctors coming off the late shift at the local county hospital, fight fans on their way home after attending matches at the Olympic Auditorium, and people associated with the Hollywood film industry.
The Carolina Burger is a regional variant of the chili burger served with coleslaw, mustard and chopped onions. Common in local restaurants in the Carolinas, it is also periodically offered at Wendy's restaurants as the Carolina Classic.
Several US food chains specialize in chili burgers. One of these is Original Tommy's, which dates to 1946. Another is Wienerschnitzel, dating back to 1961. At one time Bob's Big Boy restaurants in California served a dish named "chili size", a serving of chili over a hamburger patty in a bowl.

Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries
Dinner Tonight: Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries
For Breakfast on this Thursday morning I toasted a Healthy Life Whole Grain English Muffin and topped with Smucker's Sugarless Blackberry Jam. I also had a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. Mostly sunny and 54 degrees out but the humidity was up a bit. Started the laundry after Breakfast. Outside got the leaf blower out and cleaned of the deck area and the driveway. After Lunch went over to see Dad for the afternoon. He's doing good one day and not so good the next day. Hope he starts improving soon! So for Dinner tonight its a Smoked Turkey Sausage Dog w/ Baked Shoestring Fries.
I used the Butterball Hardwood Smoked Turkey Sausage. I cut the Sausage Links into Bun length pieces. I absolutely love the Butterball Hardwood Smoked Turkey Sausage. It’s got such a fantastic
flavor and always cooks up just right. To prepare them I used a large skillet, added about a 1/2 tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and preheated it on medium heat. Put the Sausage in the skillet when it was heated up and covered with a lid. I turned the Sausage every few minutes to get an even char on them, cooked about 11 minutes total. As always they came out just bursting with flavor and flat-out delicious! I served it on a Aunt Millie’s Reduced Calorie Whole Grain Hot Dog Bun and topped with French’s Spicy Brown Mustard.
To go with the Sausage Dog I baked up some Alexia Organic Yukon Select Fries. Seasoned them
with Morton’s Lite salt and Ground Black Pepper. Baked them at 425 degrees for 16 minutes. They bake up beautifully and seasoned just right.! Plus they are only 120 calories and 15 net carbs. Served with a side of my favorite Ketchup, Hunt’s Ketchup. I had a Diet Dr. Pepper to drink. For Dessert later a Weight Watcher’s Cookies and Cream Ice Cream Bar, love these things!

Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries
Dinner Tonight: Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries
To start the morning I toasted a Thomas Bagel Thin. These toast up great and make very good Breakfast Sandwich. Then I Scrambled some Egg Beater's Egg Whites and took one slice of Sargeto Ultra Thin Sharp Cheddar Cheese to top the Egg Whites. And I have my Breakfast Sandwich! I was at Kroger yesterday and they had the Thomas Bagel thins on sale, buy 1 get one free. These are 110 calories and 21 net carbs. I froze one package so we'll see how they hold up. We had about 1 1/2 inches of rain overnight, lot of local flooding down in Cincinnati. After Breakfast I took Mom's car in to have the oil changed at a local Car Repair we go to. Then after Lunch I went over to spend some time with Dad. Back home did a load of laundry for Mom. So for Dinner tonight its a Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries.

Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries
Dinner Tonight: Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries
To start the morning I made a packet of Pioneer White Peppered Gravy, toasted 2 slices of Healthy
Life Whole Grain Bread, fried 2 Jennie – O Turkey Sausage Links, and that morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. We finally seen a bit of sunshine today! Yesterday was a full day cool and gloomy weather. In the mid 40's today and a few peeks of the sun. After I had Breakfast I went to McDonald's to pick up Breakfast for Mom and Dad. Back home did a couple of loads of laundry for Mom. Caught up on everything else so it was an afternoon of College Football. For Dinner tonight its a Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries.
I used the Butterball Hardwood Smoked Turkey Sausage. I cut one of the Sausage Links into Bun
length pieces. I absolutely love the Butterball Hardwood Smoked Turkey Sausage. It’s got such a fantastic flavor and always cooks up just right. To prepare them I used a large skillet, added about a 1/2 tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil and preheated it on medium heat.
Seasoned them with Morton's Lite salt and Ground Black Pepper. Baked them at 425 degrees for 16 minutes. They bake up beautifully and seasoned just right. Plus they are only 120 calories and 15 net carbs. Served with a side of my favorite Ketchup, Hunt’s Ketchup. I had a Snapple Diet Dr. Pepper to drink. For Dessert later a bowl of Dole Sliced Peaches.

BBQ Pork Shoulder Roast Sandwich w/ Baked Fries
Dinner Tonight: BBQ Pork Shoulder Roast Sandwich w/ Baked Fries
I toasted a Healthy Life Whole Grain English Muffin topped with Smucker's Sugar Free Blackberry
Jam for Breakfast. Also had the morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. After Breakfast I went Meijer for some items I needed. I've been noticing the price of Tea just keeps going up and up! I was at Walmart last week and it's now $2.36 a box up from $2.18 a box about a year ago and at Meijer its up to $2.68 a box. Of course Kroger has the highest price at $3.12 a box! And its not just Tea that's rising in cost its everything practically. Having to really watch for sales and coupons. Outside today we were near a record high out today, 81 degrees! Highs back in the 60's by the weekend though. Raked what leaves I could with the help of my neighbor. Still a lot of leaves left in some of the bigger trees herein the neighborhood but the smaller ones are almost bare now. For Dinner tonight I prepared a BBQ Pork Shoulder Roast Sandwich w/ Baked Fries.
A while back I tried the Swift Premium Dry Rubbed Carnitas Boneless Petite Pork Shoulder Roast , which turned out so good! I had purchased 2 of them a while back and still had one left in the freezer. So I sat it in the fridge overnight to thaw for use for tonight's Dinner, BBQ Pork Shoulder Roast Sandwich w/ Baked Fries.
For the BBQ Pork Shoulder Roast Sandwiches I’ll be using the Swift Premium Dry Rubbed Carnitas
Boneless Petite Pork Shoulder Roast again! And preparing it one of my favorite ways, the Slow Cooker. It’s a super easy recipe to make. Start by lining my Slow Cooker with a Reynolds Slow Cooker Liner. Using the liner makes for little or no clean up. Next, removing meat from package. Place the Roast in slow cooker with 1 inch of water in bottom. Then across the top I added a thin coat of Jack Daniel’s Honey SmokeHouse BBQ Sauce. Cover and cook on HIGH for 4 hours or until fork tender. Then remove from slow cooker and allow to cool slightly. Next shred the meat with two forks, or a pair of Bear Claws which is what I used, in a large bowl and add the BBQ Sauce. You can add the BBQ Sauce now or you can add the Sauce on to your Sandwich instead. I used Jack Daniel’s Honey SmokeHouse BBQ Sauce, you can always use your favorite. I served the sandwich on a Healthy Life Whole Grain Sandwich Bun The Pork comes out incredible! As the other Swift Premium product it came out moist, juicy, and delicious! These products are so easy to prepare and top quality. Another great product to have handy in the frig or freezer.
To go with the BBQ Pulled Pork sandwiches I baked some Alexia Organic Yukon Select Fries. I
seasoned them with McCormick Grinder Sea Salt and Black Peppercorn Medley. Baked them at 425 degrees for 18 minutes. They bake up beautifully and seasoned just right, excellent Shoestring Fry! Plus they are only 120 calories and 15 net carbs. For dessert later a Jello Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Pudding.

Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries
Dinner Tonight: Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries
For Breakfast this morning I scrambled 1 Egg, cooked up 2 Glier's Turkey Goetta Patties, toasted 1
slice of Healthy Life Whole Grain Bread (lightly buttered), and had my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. After Breakfast I took Mom's car and had it washed and the inside cleaned. It's already so humid out here that it almost feels you can push the air out of the way, terrible humidity again! Here in West Chester today they have an annual Food Truck Rally but it's just too miserable out to go.You walk out here in our neighborhood all you hear are the hums of air conditioners,the Energy Company's are making a fortune. Went to Costco at 10:00 when they opened. They only have 5 electric carts for the store, which is pathetic! So if you don't get there early you won't get a cart, or at least one that is charged up (they never recharge them at that store). Anyway I was running low on my Nature Made Vitamins, picked up a Shrimp Cocktail Ring, 5 cases of canned goods for our Church Meal Center, and a couple of items Mon needed. That was about my day! For Dinner tonight its Smoked Turkey Sausage Dogs w/ Baked Shoestring Fries.

Weight Watchers Smart Ones Smart Creations Fish & Chips
Dinner Tonight: Weight Watchers Smart Ones Smart Creations Fish & Chips
Well our Summer Weather has returned, mid 80's and humid! But we did have a real nice streak of fantastic weather. Got out and stopped by some friends house for most of the day and then returned home to work on some computer problems I'm still having. I wish I knew more on working with and on computers. For dinner tonight Weight Watchers Smart Ones Smart Creations Fish & Chips.
I originally was going to have Panko Crusted Calamari w/ Brown and Wild Rice. I had prepped them and fried the first batch. Let it cool a bit and sampled it, and that's as far as that got. Calamari is just not for me. So it was a last minute switch in menu, saved by Weight Watchers Smart Ones Smart Creations Fish & Chips. First time I had tried this one and it sure saved the day! The Fish was very good, good seasoning and breading. The Chips or Fries were very good also, I love any Fry! The dinner was only 310 calories and 34 net carbs per serving, and the serving size were just enough. Frozen dinners do come in handy! For dessert later a Jello Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Mousse.

Chicken Strips & Fries
Dinner Tonight: Chicken Strips & Fries
Muggy day out there today, showers on and off and in the 80's. Finished cleaning the shed today, finally. Took a lot of garbage out to the curb. Got the cart out and helped Mom spray wash the outside of the house siding also today. Life in a wheelchair can be real frustrating at times. Certain things you just can't do, back when I had both legs I was able to do and help with everything. But all I can do is make the best of it. As my favorite saying says, “The world is what you make of it. If it doesn’t fit you make alterations.” It's still frustrating at times though. For dinner tonight a new one Weight Watchers Smart Ones Smart Creations Chicken Strips & Fries.
While at Meijer the other day I bought a few Smart Ones Frozen Dinners. Meijer has a fantastic selection of these dinners. They're produced by Weight Watchers with a nice variety of different dinners and desserts. So this one must be one their new dinners, Weight Watchers Smart Ones Smart Creations Chicken Strips & Fries. It heats up in the microwave in their new Crisping Tray, 3 minutes and 15 seconds. They're 310 calories, 3g fat, and 28 net carbs. Nice size portions, seasoned good, and a good Chicken Strips and Fries meal all for under 400 calories! I did add a bit of Sea Salt to the Chicken and Fries. I also purchased a couple of other new Smart Ones Meals, Loaded Potato Soup and Fish and Chips. For dessert later a Weight Watcher's Triple Chocolate Brownie Bliss, another new favorite of mine!

Canada - Poutine
A national dish is a dish, food or a drink that is considered to represent a particular country, nation or region.
The national dish of Canada is Poutine. Poutine is a mysterious recipe of French Canadian origin, specifically, Montreal, Quebec. Invariably when I mention eating Fries with Cheese curds and Gravy, people who have not eaten it get a funny look on their faces and make small noises of displeasure in their throats. Those that have had the pleasure of Poutine generally make small noises of desire and get a misty far off look in their eyes. It is not really surprising if you are among the latter group.
Poutine is quite possibly the perfect pub food. It ranks up there with Fried Pickles and Hard Boiled Pickled Eggs for complimenting a cold lager or ale.
In the basic recipe for poutine, French fries are topped with fresh cheese curds, and covered with brown gravy or sauce. The French fries are of medium thickness, and fried so that the inside stays soft, while the outside is crunchy. The gravy used is generally a light chicken, veal or turkey gravy, mildly spiced with a hint of pepper, or a sauce brune which is a combination of beef and chicken stock, originating in Quebec. Heavy beef or pork-based brown gravies are rarely used. Fresh cheese curds (not more than a day old) are used. To maintain the texture of the fries, the cheese curd and gravy is added immediately prior to serving the dish.
Traditional Poutine sauces (mélange à sauce poutine) are sold in Quebec and Maritime grocery stores in jars or cans and in powdered mix packet forms by St. Hubert Restaurant Co.
Ingredients:
* 4 large potatoes, peeled
* 1 teaspoon salt
* Oil for frying
* 1 cup cheese curds
* 1 1/3 cups beef gravy, heated
Preparation:
Cut the potatoes lengthwise into thin strips, about 1/3-inch in width. Soak the potatoes in ice-cold water for 1 hour, drain, and pat completely dry. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or deep skillet to 325F and fry the potatoes, in batches, for 3 minutes, until they turn dark white-yellow, but not brown. Drain the fries on fresh paper towels and allow them to rest for a few minutes.
Bring the oil back to 325F and fry the potatoes again, in batches, for 4 to 5 minutes, until they turn crisp and medium golden brown. Drain the fries on fresh paper towels, salt them, and divide them onto 4 serving plates or bowls.
Add 1/4 cup of the cheese curds and 1/3 cup of the hot beef gravy on each serving of fries. Serve hot.
This poutine recipe makes 4 servings.
