Kitchen Hint of the Day!

Making space in the fridge for Thanksgiving.........

Make space for Thanksgiving by cleaning out leftovers and expired condiments and using up as much as possible of what’s in the freezer and the refrigerator.

You can store hearty produce, like apples, fresh cranberries, and potatoes, in a cool, dry place, like the trunk of the car or the basement. We made a covered shelf in our shed, it works great as long as the weather stays cold.

Kitchen Hint of the Day!

Freezing Ground Meat.......

Before freezing ground meat, flatten it into a square or into patties, rather than leaving it in a mound. It will thaw faster later. Plus it will save on that valuable freezer space!

Kitchen Hint of the Day!

No freeze........

Never freeze baked goods while they are still warm. Moisture condenses on the outside. The interior dries out, but the surface turns gummy when the item is thawed.

Kitchen Hint of the Day!

Organize your freezer......

* Organize your freezer space into food groups: meat, fish, leftovers fruit, and vegetables. Makes for a quick find of what you are looking for instead of a search party.
* Put older packages at the front of the freezer so you can use them first.
* Make sure you label all bags and containers; contents and date frozen.

Kitchen Hint of the Day!

Freezer hint.....

You can freeze any food except canned or preserved food and whole eggs. Some foods, however, do not freeze well. High - fat products like cream and mayonnaise tend to separate when defrosted, and high water content vegetables such as lettuce and cucumbers will go soggy. Freezer temperature is critical for maintaining the quality of foods. Keep it set at 0 degrees.

Kitchen Hint of the Day!

Store fruits and vegetables in separate drawers in your fridge. Even when chilled, fruits give off ethylene gas that shortens the shelf life of other fruit and vegetables by causing them to ripen more quickly.

Kitchen Hint of the Day!

Potatoes and onions don't mix when stored together. When they are cooked together it's fine. Onions should never be stored with potatoes because moisture from the onions can cause potatoes to sprout. Onions also release gases that will alter the flavor.

Kitchen Hint of the Day!

It's a good idea to line the crisper bins of your refrigerator with a few paper towels or sheets of newspaper to absorb excess moisture. Mold spores love moisture, but the towels will keep it away.
