Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Bourbon and Brown Sugar Grillin’ Beans

Dinner Tonight: Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Bourbon and Brown Sugar Grillin’ Beans

Not much else going on today. For Dinner tonight I prepared some Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Bourbon and Brown Sugar Grillin’ Beans.

I used Blue Grass Lean Bratwurst which are 100 calories and 4 carbs per Brat, not bad at all for Brats. To prepare them; Just add the Brats to a large skillet and add water, until the Brats are half way
covered. Bring them to a brisk boil but then immediately turn down the heat to a very low boil, more of a simmer than an active boil. Simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes, then finish off in a pan with just the Brats and a little Extra Virgin Olive Oil to get a nice crispy finish. Love this method, if you can’t grill them. Delicious, plump, and they cook up great! Served it on a Kroger Whole Grain Hot Dog Bun topped with French’s Spicy Brown Mustard.

Then for a side I prepared some Bush’s Grillin’ Beans Bourbon and Brown Sugar. Not sure if I’ve had these before or not, but they sure are good! As all Bush Beans are. I just emptied the can into a small sauce pan and heated them until they started to simmer, and serve. Then for Dessert later a Weight Watcher’s Divine Triple Chocolate Ice Cream Bar. Love these, only 80 calories and 12 net carbs per bar!

Dinner Tonight: Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Vegetarian Beans

For Breakfast this morning I toasted a Healthy Life Whole Grain English Muffin and topped it with
Smucker's Sugar Free Blackberry Jam. Also had a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. After Breakfast headed to Meijer for a few items, stopped and got gas, then stopped at McDonald's and picked up Breakfast for Mom. High of 75 degrees with showers on and off. Made Dad a couple of small loaves of Pillsbury Nut Quick Bread, his favorite. Then later in the afternoon took them over to him. It looks as though he's got a couple more weeks of rehab before possibly coming home. Back home did a few things around the house. For Dinner tonight its Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Vegetarian Beans.

It's Brats and Beans for Dinner! Last time I was at Jungle Jim's I picked up a couple of packages of
Bluegrass Deliciously Lean Bratwurst. I had them in the freezer and got a couple of the Brats out and let them thaw overnight in the fridge. Love using these Blue Grass Lean Bratwurst, which are 100 calories and 4 carbs per Brat. To prepare them; Just add the Brats to a large skillet and add water, until the Brats are half way covered. Simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes, then finish off in a pan with just the Brats and a little Extra Virgin Olive Oil to get a nice crispy finish. Love this method, if you're not grilling them. Delicious, plump, and they cook up great! Served it on a Aunt Millie's Reduced Calorie Whole Grain Hot Dog Bun topped with French’s Spicy Brown Mustard.

Then for a side I prepared some Bush’s Reduced Sodium Vegetarian Baked Beans. Love these Beans,

Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Ruffle’s Potato Chips

Dinner Tonight: Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Ruffle’s Potato Chips

So to start my morning off I Scrambled some Egg Beater's Egg Whites, seasoned with Sea Salt and
Ground Pepper. Next I fried 2 Jennie - O Turkey Breakfast sausage Links and toasted 2 slices of Healthy Life Whole Grain Bread, lightly buttered with I Can't Believe It's Not Butter. After Breakfast I headed up to the assisted living center to see my friend, still not much change in him yet. On the way back home stopped by Kroger for a few items and then stopped by the bank before heading back home. Not a lot to do today, I was caught up on everything. So I got the cart out drove around the neighborhood and then down by the lake for a while. Mostly sunny and near a record high for this date, 86 degrees! I don't think I have ever seen so many Squirrels. All of them were running back and forth between all the Oak Trees we have in the neighborhood gathering Acorns. For Dinner tonight I prepared some Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst with a side of Baked Ruffle’s Potato Chips.

Had to pass this one along, Grilled Bratwurst with Onions Braised in Beer and Mustard. Fire up the grill and enjoy some Bratwurst! You can find the recipe at the CooksRecipes website, http://www.cooksrecipes.com/index.html

Grilled Bratwurst with Onions Braised in Beer and Mustard

Recipe Ingredients:

4 (4-ounce) bratwurst (fresh, cooked or smoked varieties)
2 tablespoons bacon fat, lard or olive oil
3 cups onion, thinly sliced
1/8 teaspoon granulated sugar
1 (12-ounce) bottle beer, dark or amber
2 bay leaves
2 tablespoons coarse-grained mustard
4 hoagie buns, or Italian rolls, split and grill-toasted

Cooking Directions:

1 - Heat fat in 12-inch, deep skillet over medium heat. Add onions and sugar, stir well to coat with fat. Sauté onions, stirring frequently, for 10 minutes, or until starting to turn golden brown. Add beer, scraping up any browned bits from bottom of pan. Add bay leaves, lower heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Stir mustard into onions, remove from heat and set aside, discarding bay leaves.

Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Crinkle Fries

Dinner Tonight: Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Crinkle Fries

For Breakfast this morning I toasted a Healthy Life Whole Grain English Muffin that I topped with
Smucker's Sugarless Blackberry Jam. Really love Smucker's Sugarfree Jams and toppings, you can't taste a difference between the sugarless and regular Jam products. I also had that morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. Another product I love having every day. Big change in the weather out there today! Mostly sunny, a high of 79 degrees, and the big thing low or no humidity! About time. Got some cleaning done inside and then some cleaning outside. Everything done I got the cart out and spent most of the afternoon riding around enjoying this beautiful day! For Dinner tonight I prepared Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Crinkle Fries.

While at Jungle Jim's International Market yesterday I picked up a couple of packages of Bluegrass Deliciously Lean Bratwurst. These are so hard to find in this area, I had to write Blue Grass Meats last year because no local stores had any of them in stock. Now Kroger and Jungle Jim's both carry them! So I kept one package out and put the other in the freezer.

Love the Blue Grass Lean Bratwurst which are 100 calories and 4 carbs per Brat, not bad at all for Bratwurests! To prepare them; Just add the Brats to a large skillet and add water, until the Brats are
half way covered. Bring them to a brisk boil but then immediately turn down the heat to a very low boil, more of a simmer than an active boil. Simmer for about 15 to 20 minutes, then finish off in a pan with just the Brats and a little Extra Virgin Olive Oil to get a nice crispy char and finish. Love this method, if you can’t grill them. Delicious, plump, and they cook up great! Served it on a Aunt Millie's Reduced Calorie Whole Grain Hot Dog Bun topped with French’s Spicy Brown Mustard.

For a side I baked some Ore Ida Crinkle Fries, served with a side of Hunt’s Ketchup. Also had a Diet Dr. Pepper to drink. For dessert later a Jello Sugar Free Dark Chocolate Mousse.

Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Potato Puffs

Dinner Tonight: Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Potato Puffs

For Breakfast it was a couple of Jennie - O Turkey Breakfast Sausage links and a toasted Healthy
Life Whole Grain English Muffin. Along with my morning cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea, I was set to start my day. After Breakfast I headed up to the local Kroger, I needed a few items and Mom needed a couple of things. Back home got everything put away and did some light cleaning. I spent the afternoon yesterday over seeing Dad at the rehab center. He's finally getting stronger and walking with a walker on his own. He'll be home Tuesday! So anyway I didn't get a whole lot of sleep last night, Phantom Pains started a little after midnight. Hate dealing with those, so painful and aggravating! For dinner tonight I prepared a Bluegrass Lean Bratwurst w/ Baked Potato Puffs.

While digging in the freezer I found a couple of packages of Bluegrass Deliciously Lean Bratwurst. These are so hard to find in this area, I had to write Blue Grass Meats last year because no local stores had any of them in stock. Finally Kroger started to carry them for a while so I had bought a couple of packages of them and forgot I had them, until yesterday!

Love the Blue Grass Lean Bratwurst which are 100 calories and 4 carbs per Brat. To prepare them;
Just add the Brats to a large  skillet and add water, until the Brats are half way covered. Served it on a Kroger Lite Wheat Bun topped with French’s Spicy Brown Mustard.

Then for a side dish I prepared something new, Alexia Potato Puffs. To prepare them; Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.  Arrange the frozen potatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with foil. Baked for 25, stirring halfway through the cooking time. And Bam, got another Keeper Potato Product! Browned up perfect with excellent seasoning. For dessert later a Healthy Choice Dark Fudge Swirl Frozen Greek Yogurt.

38TH ANNUAL Taste of Cincinnati - May 28-30.

38TH ANNUAL
The Nation's Longest Running Free Culinary Festival
2016
May
28-30
5TH STREET DOWNTOWN CINCINNATI, OHIO

Taste of Cincinnati is held every Memorial Day weekend in downtown Cincinnati by the Corporate and Community Events division of the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. Started in 1979, it is now the nation's longest running culinary arts festival.

Taste of Cincinnati started as a one-day fest in Piatt Park, then known as Garfield Park, with approximately 5,000 attending the first event. The event expanded to two days in 1981, and in 1988 expanded to three days and moved to Central Parkway. Taste of Cincinnati was the brainchild of Karen Maier, vice president of marketing for Frisch’s Restaurants Inc. Maier cooked up the idea after reading about Taste of the Big Apple in the Nation’s Restaurant News, an industry trade publication.

In 2007, the event was moved to Fifth Street to spotlight the $42-million renovation of Fountain Square and its underground parking garage, and to bring the event closer to Downtown's cluster of hotels, such as The Cincinnatian Hotel, the Garfield Suites Hotel, the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza, the Hyatt Regency Cincinnati, the Millennium Hotel Cincinnati, The Terrace Hotel and the Westin Hotel Cincinnati.

Approximately 500,000 now attend the annual food extravaganza, making Taste one of the nation's
largest street festivals. Taste of Cincinnati was named Food Event of the Year for 1997 by Events Business News, the recognized authority of the special events business in the United States, selecting it out of 40,000 special events across the nation.

Taste of Cincinnati features more than 40 fine restaurants serving up delicious and delectable menu items. In the weeks leading up to Taste each year, menu items are previewed and judged for prestigious Best of Taste Awards.

Taste of Cincinnati is also a music festival, with continuous live entertainment featuring local and national recording stars performing on multiple stages throughout the event.

Kitchen Hints of the Day!

A couple of Brat grilling hints......

* Low and Slow. If you plan to move your sausages straight to the grill, use indirect heat. Doing so can deliver the attributes of pre-poaching with the deep caramelization that results from dry-heat roasting.

 * One way to grill your brats is to partially poach the sausages in beer or wine before grilling. This has the added advantage of adding flavor and melting out some of the excess fat. After par-poaching the brats, grill them until brown (about 4-6 minutes on each side) turning with only tongs. Piercing the casing with a fork is a big no-no! Poking a brat will release the juices and result in a dried-out brat. Brats can also be lightly brushed with oil before putting them on the grill.
