The Cincinnati Chili Trail

Those of you that live or have visited know how delicious the Chili is here in this area is. Cheese Coneys, Chili Spaghetti, Chili Sandwich, 3-Way, 4-Way, or 5-Way we have them all here. But if you have never had the pleasure of following The Cincinnati Chili Trail, here's your guide. Enjoy and that Chili! The link to full article is at the bottom of the post.

The Cincinnati Chili Trail
A tour of treasured neighborhood chili joints is a delicious way to get to know the Queen City’s
A Cincinnati chili 4-way garnished with oyster crackers
diverse enclaves

If you’ve lived in Cincinnati for any amount of time, you’ve likely stumbled into the center of a debate between die-hard fans of Skyline and Gold Star: which local chili chain is the best? Both founded by immigrants — Skyline in 1949 by Greek transplant Nicholas Lambrinides and Gold Star in 1965 by the four Jordanian Daoud brothers — they used secret family recipes to create the city’s top feuding chili empires, spreading saucy meat and golden cheese across the Tristate.

But if partisan chili politics isn’t your thing, you can always take the road less traveled and try your tastebuds at a neighborhood parlor, which are just as steeped in tradition and their own unique recipes. Some, like iconic (and James Beard Award-winning) Camp Washington Chili or Food Network-featured Blue Ash Chili are already famous in their own right. Others? Others are more obscure and may not haven’t gotten the Guy Fieri stamp of approval, but are just as vital — and delicious — community institutions.

Starting with the godfather of chili parlors, Empress Chili, and working our way around the city from Northside to Newport, we tried to get a taste for the history and cuisine of several distinct neighborhood spots. We not only discovered the impact that Empress has had as the proverbial trunk of the local family tree of chili joints, but also that noodles slathered in meat sauce taste distinct at each destination.

We couldn’t visit every cherished chili parlor, but here are the fables and flavors behind those we did.......

Cheese and Turkey Chili Dogs

Dinner Tonight:  Cheese and Turkey Chili Dogs

For Breakfast this morning I made a 2 Egg Cheese Omelet along with 2 Jennie – O Turkey Breakfast Patties, toasted a slice of Aunt Millie’s Light Whole Grain Bread, and a cup of Bigelow Decaf Green Tea. Outside it’s a bit cooler, 47 degrees this morning and a high of 73 degrees. It looks like more of Fall like weather has moved in finally! Cleaned the brushes of our vacuum then cleaned the house, dusted and vacuum. Then outside got my handy leaf blower out and cleaned the deck and driveway off. After Lunch I repotted a couple of flowers for Mom, sure is nice out! Then got the cart out and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon. Went around the neighborhood and down to the lake. For Dinner tonight Cheese and Turkey Chili Dogs.

I had just enough of my 2 Bean Turkey Chili leftover to make some Cheese and Turkey Chili Dogs. To make them I'll need; 3 Bean Turkey Chili, Ball Park Smoked Turkey Franks, Aunt Millie’s Reduced Calorie Whole Grain Hot Dog Buns, French’s Yellow Mustard, and Sargento Reduced Fat Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese. Them are some good fixings to make some Coneys with!

To prepare them; Heat the Chili in a medium saucepan until just heated through. Next I cooked the Hot Dogs. I used a medium size sauce pan, filled 3/4 full of water and heated to a boil. When water was boiling I added the Franks, boiled for 5 minutes. Removed the pan from the heat, drained the water, and prepared the Cheddar Chili Dogs. Spread each Bun with Mustard. Place a Hot Dog in each Bun and top with Beans. Sprinkle each with Cheese. These turned out fantastic, love the Chili and Cheddar toppings.

Served it with some Ruffles Reduced Fat Potato Chips and some Lay’s Ranch Dip. Also had a
Caffeine Free Diet Coke. For Dessert later a Weight Watcher's Cookies and Cream Ice Cream Bar.

One of America's Favorites - White Hot

White Hot

The white hot is a variation on the hot dog found primarily in the Rochester, New York area, as well as other parts of Western New York and Central New York. It is composed of a combination of uncured and unsmoked pork, beef, and veal; the lack of smoking or curing allows the meat to retain a naturally white color. White hots usually contain mustard and other spices, and often include a dairy component such as nonfat dry milk.

The white hot, also commonly referred to as a coney, originated in the 1920s in Rochester's German community as a "white and porky". It was originally a cheaper alternative to high-price red hot dogs, made of the less desirable meat parts and various fillers; in contrast, modern versions are made from quality meats and are generally sold at higher prices than common hot dogs.

One of the best-known producers of the white hot is Zweigle's. Although they were not the first to make white hots, they were the first to secure a contract at the Red Wing Stadium soon after Zweigle's founder Robert Berl began making the dogs in 1925. The white hot has become the official hot dog of the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, Rochester Americans and Rochester Rhinos and was the official hot dog of the Washington Nationals during the major league baseball team's first season.

Another producer, Hofmann, produces white hots in the Syracuse, New York area under the name "Snappy Grillers". A third company, Hartmann, is also known to produce white hots.

Chili and Cheese Coneys!

Dinner Tonight: Chili and Cheese Coneys!

Only about 40 degrees this morning, Spring time? The high for the day wasn't much higher and there was a cold breeze blowing all day. But 70's and 80's coming the upcoming week. Ran Mom around for a few errands and home. For dinner tonight, nothing but comfort food! Tonight it's Chili and Cheese Coneys!

I used Oscar Mayer Extra Lean Turkey Franks. Just boiled them for 5 minutes and they were ready. A very lean Hot Dog, only 50 calories and 4 carbs per Hot Dog. Then for the Chili I used Hormel Turkey Chili with Beans. One of the best canned Chilis there is, in my opinion. It's a nice thick Chili and seasoned just right with plenty of Beans. Emptied the can into a small sauce pan and heated it up for about 10 minutes or so. I did add a few shakes of Frank’s Red Hot Sauce to the Chili as it was heating up.

Served everything on a Healthy Life Whole Grain Hot Dog Bun. Topped the Dog with French’s Yellow Mustard, Sargento Reduced Fat Shredded Sharp Cheddar Cheese, and then the Chili and they were ready to go! Nothing better than a couple of Cincinnati Style Chili and Cheese Coneys for dinner! For dessert later, I had baked some Pillsbury Nut Quick Bread. Instead of adding 2 Eggs to the batter I used Egg Beaters, 2 Eggs (Medium size) is 140 calories while 2 servings of Egg Beaters is only 50 calories. So I'll have a slice of the Nut Quick Bread topped with a scoop of Breyer's Carb Smart Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.
