The annual Food Truck Rally begins with a preview Thursday night at The Takeover presented by First Financial Bank and continues with the main event Friday. About 35 trendy food trucks will be featured at this event.

Make time to spend the day, or plan several snack stops throughout to sample all of the trucks. Food is prepared fresh to order from the mini-gourmet kitchens on wheels.

Bands, beer and a fireworks show round out the evening. This event is by the Union Centre Boulevard

Bring your appetite to Buckeye BBQ fest

WEST CHESTER TWP. – The sounds of blues join the smell of barbecue on The Square at Union Center this weekend at the Buckeye BBQ fest fundraiser.

The festival runs from 5-11 p.m. Friday and from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday at The Square, 9285 Centre Pointe Drive. Admission is $5 for adults; children ages 12 and younger are admitted free.

Unlike past years there will not be a Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned competition, said Sandy Likes, marketing chairwoman for the event and a member of the Rotary’s board.

Instead there will be additional barbecue vendors offering food.

“People really wanted to be able to eat barbecue,” Likes said. “We added more barbecue – and other

– vendors to the event and took out the competition.”

About 90 vendors will be present – up from about 50 a year ago – including more than 20 selling barbecue and more than 15 offering desserts.

“If you’re not into barbecue, there are plenty of other foods,” Likes said. “We’re really excited about the caliber and quality of selections.”

The Mobile Cone is returning along with chili, Kona Ice, World of Waffles and others.

The committee has added more seating to this year’s event and a cigar bar. There will be a beer garden on site featuring micro-beers and wine. Non-alcoholic beverages will also be sold.

The Kids Zone is coming back and features face painting, inflatables and a 12-animal, free petting zoo from noon to 8:30 p.m. Saturday,

Two car shows are part of this year’s event. On Friday there will be an open club show. A classic car show limited to pre-1970 cars along with hot rods will be featured Saturday with awards presented at 7 p.m.

Friday’s headliner group is Johnny Fink and The Intrusion. Last year the group won the Cincy Blues Society’s Band Challenge. It was also a finalist in last year’s Cincinnati Entertainment Awards’ best blues band category.

Vocalist Tullie Brae is the headlining act. She takes the stage at 9:15 p.m.

The Union Centre Food Truck Rally, planned for Aug. 30, will bring 15 food trucks to the township’s

community square. Alcoholic beverage sales from the event, which is being organized by the Union Centre Boulevard Merchant’s Association, will benefit the launch of the Boys and Girls Club of West Chester/Liberty Twp.

The Community Foundation of West Chester/Liberty Twp. plans to launch a Boys and Girls Club thanks to a $750,000 grant from the Ohio Attorney General’s office. Community Foundation officials hope to raise enough money, eventually, to build a club complex.

Food trucks have become a popular type of eatery nationwide, said Shellie Leder, the secretary for the merchant’s association. She said the township has a strong business community to support the food truck rally event.

“We’re hoping a lot of businesses in the area bring their offices done for lunch and then come down after work (for the event),” Leder said. “West Chester, it’s a thriving city here. We do have food trucks in West Chester on a regular basis.”

Emily Frank, who operates a food truck called C’est Cheese that serves up gourmet grilled cheese in Cincinnati and greater Cincinnati neighborhoods, is one of the business owners that frequents West Chester Twp. to peddle her food. She will sell several different kinds of grilled cheese at the Union Centre Food Truck Rally.

“I’m primarily in the suburbs,” Frank said. “It’s a big misconception that food trucks are only in downtown (Cincinnati). Food trucks are not a fad, they’re here to stay.”

A variety of food will be served up at the food truck rally. Some of the trucks will serve serve

desserts, such as cupcakes or shaved ice, while other will focus on main courses, including pizza, burgers and waffle sandwiches. Variety is part of the appeal of a food truck rally, Leder said.
“I have five in my family and we can’t agree on what to eat. (Food trucks) solve that problem,” she said.

The rally, which runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 30, will feature live music throughout the day. Alcoholic beverages will be available for sale and the proceeds from those sales will benefit Boys and Girls Club of West Chester and Liberty Twp.

– The smell of barbecue and the sounds of the blues will fill The Square at Union Centre this weekend.

That's where the Rotary Club of West Chester/Liberty will host its fifth annual Buckeye BBQ Fest fundraiser featuring a Kansas City BBQ Society-sanctioned competition for the third year.

"It's really exciting to see how it's grown – both the barbecue and quality of music,'' said Sandy Likes, marketing chairwoman for the event and a member of the Rotary's board. "The barbecue teams are really into their barbecue."

The festival runs from 5-11 p.m. Friday and from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday at The Square, 9285 Centre Pointe Drive. Admission is $5 for adults; children ages 12 and younger are admitted free.

About 36 teams will be competing for cash, awards and bragging rights – plus an entry into the lottery for admission into the Jack Daniel's World Champion Invitational Barbecue.

Teams will be competing in several categories including pork ribs, pork shoulder, beef brisket and chicken.

A separate People's Choice event from 2-4 p.m. Saturday offers a $15 card that allows spectators to sample pulled pork from 12 competitors and vote for their top choice.

There will be non-stop music both days through a partnership between the Rotary Club and the Cincy Blues Society. The society arranged for performances from 10 different bands.

Headlining Friday night is the Stacy Mitchhart Band, which begins its two-hour show at 8:45 p.m. The Noah Wotherspoon Band is Saturday's main band, beginning its performance at 9 p.m.

About 50 vendors – including 14 selling barbecue – will be at the festival this year selling pies, kettle corn, ice cream and other goodies. There will be a beer garden on site featuring micro-beers and wine. Non-alcoholic beverages will also be sold.

There will be a Kids Zone with face painting, inflatables and a 12-animal, free, petting zoo from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday. Tickets for the inflatables cost $2 each; six for $5; or 15 for $10.

Dog Fest 2011 West Chester, Ohio

What is Dog Fest?

Dog Fest originated in 1999 as a community event for West Chester where people could bring their dog or dogs for a day of fun with just a few events and booths, exhibitors and entertainers. Dog Fest, 2011 will draw over 15,000 people and their canine friends, 8 food vendors, 110+ booths, entertainment, demonstrations, contests, and food for the canines and their humans too! Dog Fest’s mission is to educate families about the existence of the many wonderful animal shelters and rescues in the greater Cincinnati area that take in stray and abandoned animals from the streets. They are housed, fed, and provided with veterinary care until loving homes can be found for them.

West Chester, Ohio Great Pumpkin Fest

W EST CHESTER TWP, Ohio. — West Chester’s Great Pumpkin Fest is this weekend, and although the festival has no connection to the fabled Great Pumpkin in the “Peanuts” comics, it is geared primarily toward children and families.
The 10th annual event runs from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Keehner Park, 7411 Barret Road.
Barbara Wilson, public information officer for West Chester Twp., said the festival has some new features this year.
“We have extra pony carousels so kids don’t have to wait very long,” she said. And those are real ponies, not wooden ones, she said.
Another highlight is the costume contest. Registration for this will begin at 2 p.m. with the actual contest judging at 3 p.m., Wilson said.
Kids will be divided into eight age groups and will be judged by the Primrose School. Trophies and other prizes will be awarded.
While many Halloween attractions in the area feature blood-curdling chills, the Pumpkin Fest has a more genteel version called the “not so scary haunted trail.”
Run with the help of local Girl Scouts, the trail includes stops where kids play games and the Scouts are dressed in costumes.
If the weather is good, and it is expected to be, Wilson said as many as 5,000 people may attend the event.
“We just wanted to have a fall festival for the community that was focused on families,” Wilson said.
There is also a Pumpkin Fest happening noon to 6 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 23 at McMonigle Farm, 7441 Franklin Madison Road in Middletown.
It features pumpkins, hayrides, and other family fun and for the second season pumpkin fest.
