Soybean Meal Peptides Could Stop Colon, Liver And Lung Cancer Growth
Soybean Meal Peptides Could Stop Colon, Liver And Lung Cancer Growth
The bean used to make tofu could also have powerful anti-cancer properties, according to a new study published in the journal Food Research International.
Researchers from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville found that peptides from soybean meal -- the leftover product after oil is taken out of soybean seeds -- are able to stop the growth of colon cancer, liver cancer and lung cancer cells in a lab setting.
"Dose response showed that the peptides had significant inhibitory effect at higher concentrations … and gradually decreased with decreased dosage," the researchers wrote in the study, meaning that the higher the dose of the soybean seed peptides, the greater the effect on the cancer cells.
Researchers specifically reported that the peptides stopped colon cancer cell growth by 73 percent and liver cancer cell growth by 70 percent. And lung cancer cell growth was stopped by 68 percent.
Another natural compound that could potentially stop the growth of cancer? The red grape compound resveratrol, which was shown in a lab setting to stop breast cancer cell growth because of its effect on estrogen.
And a compound in broccoli, called sulforaphane, seems to kill leukemia cells in a lab setting without having any detrimental effects on healthy cells.

Another Birthday and Another Year Ahead of Cancer!
Today is my Birthday, 54, and it's always an extra personal celebration being a Cancer Survivor! To see another Birthday means I'm still here and staying ahead of cancer. It's my dream before it's my time to go to hear the Medical world announce that they have finally found a cure for Cancer! This coming July (2013), if all goes well, will be my 9 year anniversary of being Cancer Free. I still see my Oncologist every 3 months, Scans and X-Rays every 6 months, and my Dermatologist 2 times a year. Prevention, Prevention, Prevention! It's huge for all Cancer Survivors to stay on top of it. I lost my left leg to Melanoma cancer back in 2001 and then had to fight again afterwards. Then I was involved in a Cancer Trial at University of Pittsburgh for one year along with 93 others. I was told sometime back that I was the only one to have survived due to the trial and whole lot of prayer from family and friends. A prosthetic leg, unfortunately, never worked due to the fact my leg was cut so short (Just under my left hip). But I have accepted being an amputee and life in a wheelchair. And through it all I feel very blessed! So Happy Birthday to me and very proud to say I'm a Cancer Survivor!

(Green) Tea Time
(Green) Tea Time
Amy Schafer, Alligator Blogger
Tea has been referred to medicine in a mug for years. Tea has been linked to good health for centuries. It seems like every day there is new research about a new benefit of green tea. From weight loss powers to cancer-fighting antioxidants, green tea is a cup of gold.
According to research published in the journal Immunology Letters, green tea boosts the immune system by increasing the number of T cells in the body. T cells work to support immune function and suppress autoimmune diseases. Drinking green tea regularly is a good way to naturally protect the immune system without pharmaceutical drugs.
A study at the University of Stratheclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, found that green tea can actually shrink cancer tumors. These results occurred when green tea extract was applied directly to the tumors, so drinking green tea could have similar effects.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that drinking green tea helps functioning as we age. The journal cites a study that found green tea consumption to significantly decrease the risk of functional disability.
Green tea is also known to be a detoxifier. Green tea can help your body naturally get rid of waste and toxins. The beverage is also known to help with easing digestion.
The antioxidant EGCG found in green tea can protect the skin from the damages of free radicals. Free radicals diminish the skin’s collagen and cause wrinkles. The polyphenols in green tea can also revitalize dying skin cells.
If green tea isn’t your “cup of tea,” consider trying black, white, oolong or herbal teas. Each type of tea has different health benefits and varying tastes.

Diet: Certain foods provide necessary nutrients that can help protect you from illness.
Yogurt. Probiotics in yogurt have been shown to help shorten the length of a cold by a couple days.
Mushrooms. Their beta glucan content helps enhance macrophage activity, which helps ward off infections.
Seafood. It is rich in omega 3s that help increase the activity of the white cells that take care of bacteria and also good source of selenium, a potent antioxidant.
Green Tea. Green tea has high levels of catechins, another powerful antioxidant that helps fight inflammation.
Almonds. They’re a good source of vitamin E, which can help prevent colds……

Green tea compound may help shrink tumors
Green tea compound may help shrink tumors
GLASGOW, Scotland, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A compound in green tea -- epigallocatechin gallate -- may help combat cancer by shrinking tumors, researchers in Scotland suggest.
Study leader Dr. Christine Dufes of the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences and colleagues at the University of Glasgow said the team used an approach that allowed the treatment of epigallocatechin gallate delivered specifically to the tumors intravenously.
The study, published in the journal Nanomedicine, found nearly two-thirds of the tumors it was delivered to either shrank or disappeared within one month. In addition, the treatment displayed no side effects to normal tissues, Dufes said.....

Green tea can reduce skin cancer
Green tea can reduce skin cancer
Aug 23, 2012 | © The Daily Telegraph
Powerful new anti-cancer drugs based on green tea could be developed after scientists found an extract from the beverage could make almost half of skin tumours vanish.
The team of researchers from the University of Strathclyde made 40% of human skin cancer tumours disappear using the compound in a laboratory study.
Green tea has long been suspected of having anti-cancer properties and the extract, epigallocatechin gallate, has been investigated. However, this is the first time researchers have managed to make it effective at shrinking tumours.
Previous attempts to capitalise on its cancer-fighting properties have failed because scientists had used intravenous drips, which failed to deliver enough of the extract to the tumours themselves.
The Strathclyde team devised an alternative "targeted delivery system", piggybacking the extract on proteins that carry iron molecules, which tumours readily absorb. The laboratory test on one type of human skin cancer showed 40% of tumours disappeared after a month of treatment, while an additional 30% shrank.
Dr Christine Dufes, who led the research, said: "When we used our method, the green tea extract reduced the size of many of the tumours every day, in some cases removing them altogether.
"By contrast, the extract had no effect when it was delivered by other means as every one of these tumours continued to grow. This research could open doors to new treatments."
Dufes said population studies had previously shown green tea had anti-cancer properties, and scientists had identified the active compound as epigallocatechin gallate. The Strathclyde researchers were the first to deliver it in high enough doses to tumours to have an effect.
She said: "The problem with this extract is when it is administered intravenously, it goes everywhere in the body, so when it gets to the tumours it is too diluted. With the targeted delivery system, it is taken straight to the tumours without any effect on normal tissue."
Scientists are increasingly using targeted delivery to improve results, relying on the many "receptors" that tumours have for different biological substances.
In this instance, scientists used the fact that tumours have receptors for transferrin, a plasma protein which transports iron through the blood.

More and more tea makers are adding green tea in their portfolio as consumers in India are developing a taste for the beverage for its many health-promoting effects.
Green tea consumption in India is rising at a rate of more than 10 percent annually. According to J Thomas & Company, the world's largest tea auctioneer, consumption of green tea, considered very urbane and sophisticated, is rising from a very tiny base.
"From a small consumption base, demand for green tea is increasing. There will be growth in consumption. Traditionally, people here drink black tea with sugar and milk. But green tea consumption will grow in the future because of its health benefits and awareness," said Krishan Katyal, J Thomas & Co director.
Katyal said India, the world's second biggest producer of tea, on an average produces 9-11 million kg of green tea annually and half of that was currently being consumed domestically.
"It (consumption) will grow. I, however, do not think that it will grow by leaps and bounds," he observed.....

Green tea is very special - Jamaica Gleaner Online
Green tea is very special
Jamaica Gleaner Online
A TEA lover, Bernard-Paul Heroux, once wrote: "There is no trouble so great or grave that cannot be much diminished by a nice cup of tea."
Today, medical research clearly highlights the special health benefits of a specific tea - green tea, a drink made from the leaves of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis). The same plant produces green tea, black tea, and oolong tea, but because of the way it is processed, green tea is truly unique.
Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world besides water and has been used by man for millennia. Much of its benefits have been attributed to potent antioxidants found in the tea leaves called polyphenols. These substances are also found in smaller amounts in other plant foods like cocoa.
Recently, however, researchers have identified another substance that is found only in the tea plant. It is a special amino acid called theanine that accounts for the ability of tea to create relaxation while energising the drinker. Theanine is the predominant amino acid in green tea leaves and gives tea its characteristic taste while contributing to many of its other medicinal benefits.

Why is green tea so healthy?
Why is green tea so healthy?
by AMY ANDERSON, Daily Mail
It has just emerged that American doctors have developed a cream to ward off skin cancer. The magic ingredient is green tea, which is well known for its cancer-fighting properties.
Natural antioxidants called polyphenols in the tea help block the growth of skin cancer cells. In fact, green tea has a whole host of other health benefits.
Green tea helps burn fat
It can help speed up the metabolic rate because its antioxidant effect helps the liver to function more efficiently.
A recent U.S. study of overweight men found that, with no other changes to their diet or exercise regimes, drinking green tea three times a day burned up 200 extra calories a day. The green tea drinkers also found that their energy levels were greatly increased.
Green tea protects against heart disease
It has been shown to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, because its potent antioxidant effects inhibit the oxidation of LDL cholesterol in the arteries.
The formation of abnormal blood clots (thrombosis) is the leading cause of heart attack and stroke, and green tea has been shown to inhibit abnormal blood clot formation as effectively as aspirin.
Green tea can help lower blood pressure
A major cause of hypertension (high blood pressure) is an enzyme secreted by the kidneys called angiotension- converting enzyme (ACE).
Popular drugs for hypertension act as ACE inhibitors: by blocking the effects of ACE, blood pressure is reduced. Green tea is a natural ACE inhibitor, and several medical studies show lowered blood pressure in animals and humans given green tea extracts.
Green tea can help protect against diabetes
When starch is consumed, it requires the enzyme amylase to break it down into simple sugars that can be absorbed in the bloodstream.
Green tea polyphenols inhibit amylase, and so can help lower blood sugar levels. High blood levels of glucose and insulin predispose people to diabetes.
Green tea can help prevent food poisoning
As it can kill bacteria, drinking green tea with meals may reduce the risk of bacterial food poisoning.
It prevents the growth of dangerous intestinal bacterial strains such as clostridia and E. coli and promotes the growth of friendly bifidobacteria.
Green tea can prevent bad breath
Drinking green tea - which is a natural anti-bacterial agent - with food may help kill the oral bacteria that cause cavities and bad breath.
Green tea guards against hepatitis
Viral hepatitis is often triggered by high levels of iron in the liver. Green tea lowers iron levels throughout the body, so may have a direct anti-viral effect against certain strains of hepatitis.
Green tea can protect against cancer
There is growing evidence to suggest that green tea contains compounds that fight cancer. The tea contains a compound called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), which helps inhibit blood vessel growth.
Green tea can help prevent arthritis
A recent study found that antioxidants in green tea may prevent or reduce the severity of symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
Antioxidants in the tea inhibit the Cox-2 gene that triggers inflammation, working in much the same way as anti-inflammatory drugs.
Green tea improves your immunity
Gargling with green tea boosts immunity to influenza and flu, according to a study in Japan.
Research at Harvard University also indicated that green tea chemicals stimulated gammadelta T-cells, which bolster immunity against bacteria and viruses.
Green tea can protect against Alzheimer's disease
A recent two-year study of a group of people aged 80 and over found that 96 per cent of those who drank ten cups of green tea a day showed no signs of cognitive impairment, compared to only 12 per cent who didn't drink green tea.
Green tea can help fight allergies
Researchers in Japan have identified a compound in green tea that, in laboratory tests, blocks a key cell receptor involved in producing an allergic response.
The compound, methylated epigallocatechin gallate, works by blocking the production of histamine and immunoglobulin E, two compounds in the body that are chiefly involved in triggering and sustaining allergic reactions
